Obama wins Tenth Straight - Wife is Finally Proud to be an American

Obama is rolling, no doubt about it. His good fortune in the primaries is pleasing to his wife also. She stated very plainly on Monday, " Let me tell you, for the first time in my adult life, I am really proud of my country." Well said Michelle. Most of us are proud of the ole USA no matter who is in control. Most of us believe it is the greatest nation on Earth. One bright spot though - she has also noted that she is not sure if she can support Hillary if she should win the nomination. Sounds like if things don't go her way, she will take her toys, and hubby, and go home.

The only question is this: Why does it matter?

You see Roger, a lot of liberals do not really like America. I suspect that given your affection for Europe that you deep down harbor ill feelings toward America. Liberals believe the U.S. is the cause of the world's troubles, that we are war lovers and mother nature haters. It matters because if someone doesn't believe in the idea of America, how can they govern a place that is that idea? Moreover, if your spouse is only proud of America when you are on top, heaven help us when Obama is in power and things don't go her way.

I wonder if Michelle Obama's minor in college was acting and drama? I suspect if Michelle Obama's husband becomes President she'll learn that it has been a God given blessing for her to be raised in America and will have a new found respect for her country. It's unfortunate that this woman doesn't appreciate having the rights and opportunities to attend Princeton University, Harvard Law School, the right to vote and the freedom to publicly criticize her country without the fear of being locked up. If the fact that her husband is running for President and that a vast group of Kool-Aid drinkers are following them like the Pied Piper is the only thing that makes her proud of her country, then I don't think she's any more suitable than Hillary Clinton as First Lady.

I just have this to say about any American having affection for Europe and harboring ill feelings towards America...

There's a vast population of Europeans on the internet. I suggest disgruntled American's go on the internet and make friends with ordinary Europeans. Get to know them. Learn from them about their lives, their health care, their tax system, etc. I did and still continue to! I thank God that I was privileged and abundantly blessed to be born in America. I'll take America over Europe any day! May God continue to bless America!

And, if it matters, how do you make the call?

What basis do you use for judgment? What score keeping system makes the U.S. the greatest nation on Earth? And who's keeping the score?

Can anyone claim their country is the "greatest" if they haven't lived for a substantial amount of time in at least several others?

If a Scadinavian claims his or her country is the greatest, how does one go about proving them wrong?

Huh? This is talk radio nonsense. I did not serve in the military but did go to the seminary when I was 18 and was classified 4-D at that time. I did register for the draft and did and do love my country and never presume anyone of any political ilk does not.

Democrats are often accused of not loving country. Yet, many some have managed to demonstrate their loathing for the United States by serving their country. Some famous nation hating liberals:

George McGovern, liberal. Only Senator who opposed US involvement in Vietnam during the Kennedy administration. 35 B-24 Missions over German in World War II when the fatality rate amongst these people was better than 50%. Silver Star.

John F. Kennedy, liberal. Naval officer awarded Navy and Marine Corps Medal for heroism the the Purple Heart.

John Kerry, liberal. Officer in Vietnam. Three Purple Hearts, One Bronze Star, One Silver Star.

Jim Webb, liberal. Navy Cross, the Silver Star Medal, two Bronze Star Medals, and two Purple Hearts

Jack Murtha, called a liberal. 37-year career in the U.S. Marine Corps, Bronze Star and two Purple Hearts, retired from the Marine Corps Reserve as a colonel in 1990.

Charlie Rengle, Charles Rangel, Staff Sgt., U.S. Army 1948-52; Bronze Star, Korea

Tom Daschle - 1st Lt., U.S. Air Force SAC 1969-72

They are often accused of hating their nation by some of the leading conservative voices.

Mitch McConnell Did not serve in the military

Trent Lott Did not serve in the military

John Boehner Did not serve in the military

Rudy Giuliani Did not serve in the military

Mitt Romney Did not serve in the military

Fred Thompson Did not serve in the military

Dennis Hastert Did not serve in the military

Tom DeLay Did not serve in the military

Rush Limbaugh Did not serve in the military

Dick Cheney Did not serve in the military

George W. Bush Served 4 out of a 6 year commitment to the air national guard.

Karl Rove Did not serve in the military

Ronald Reagan Did not pass the physical but he did make war movies.

These are not exhaustive lists by any means and I do not mean to imply that Republicans haven't service.

John McCain is a legitimate war hero who spent over 5 years as a POW in Vietnam and suffered untold horrors.

George H. W. Bush was a Naval Pilot in the Pacific during World War II and was a legitimate hero.

Bob Dole was grievously wounded in Italy in WWII.

But no one is saying that they didn't love their country because they were/are, conservative.

You greatly owe many liberal people who love this country dearly, a huge apology.

People hold viewpoints for often very varied, very complex reasons. It's not up to us to judge whether their love of nation.

Excellent point, John.

Aside from military service, the idea is just as troubling.

If someone through reading or travel or any other experiences becomes aware of a different way to do something that seems to work well and tries to convince their town/state/country to explore or adopt it in the hope that it can improve, they do so because they dislike their country?

That just fundamentally doesn't make any sense.

The only outcome is to discourage reading, traveling, learning, and participation.

Does the U.S. sometimes cause trouble in the world?

Yes.

Do other countries sometimes do the same thing?

Yes.

In the same way, the U.S sometimes contributes to widely beneficial solutions, just like other countries do.

Would it be helpful to try to actually learn from each other rather than giving over our better instincts to blind nationalism so that we can collectively adopt best practices for mutual benefit?

Of course it would.

If saying so leaves me open to unfounded anti-patriot accusations, I'm willing to live with that to try to do the right thing. I just shouldn't have to.

Do some people read between lines or twist words that are written? Yes, liberal Democrats do. Yawn!

The New Albanian said...

What's cool is that you have to know the words before you can twist them.

Or, conversely, hide behind a flag.

Suzanne said...

And you seem to have all of the answers, huh? hahaha!

The only ones I see hiding behind a flag are disgruntled American's dreaming of European ways. You have my blessings...have at it! We'll hold your space for ya. hahaha!

C'mon...entertain us some more.
You're a piece of work...you are! :)

I'd say only that if one considers the number of Europeans moving to the UNited States or expressing a preference to move here, the numbers are small, indeed.

Granted, one can always find a person from anywhere to agree on any topic, and this topic is no exception. Still, the Europeans I know are well informed about America, willing to offer profuse opinions both pro and con, and perfectly content to remain where they are.

If it wasn't for liberals and progressives she would not have had those rights and opportunities and neither would you. Do you vote? If you do, thank a liberal/progressive.

i served 8 honorable years in the U.S. Navy.

i don't subscribe to one party. just the candidate that makes the most sense to me.

i guess i tend to have some liberal views on things. so let me respond to the "liberals do not really like America," remark.

i love America! i signed up to give my life for this country. however, just because we are America, or American, doesn't automatically make us right.

i had many shipmates that had this attitude that if you don't speak English, that made you less intelligent than "Americans." many of my european friends not only spoke Spanish, they spoke no less than 3 other languages.

i have a fondness for European things, becuase to me, it made sense!

i loved the fact that i had to either walk or ride my bike, or if it were a long trip, take a bus or train. do you wonder why Europeans aren't fat slops like 66% of the U.S. adult population is?

they don't serve "Super size" foods! do you really need 1800 kcal. of saturated fat? don't think so.

siestas!!! they actually help with productivity!

30 days of mando vacation! Americans are over worked and over stressed trying to keep up with the "Jones." Americans want to consume, consume, consume. Gimmie, gimmie, gimmie! I need more than anyone else! Dude...leave enough for your children and be done with it. none of this stuff can be taken wherever you go after your ticker stops!

i love America for what it is, however, i love America for what it could be and if it means adopting some things from our European or Asia neighbors so be it! it doesn't mean i hate America, just that i see the benefits and want Americans to benefit from it too!

Obviously I don't know who your European friends are but my European friends "know" the USA through the eyes of main stream television, which is liberally bias.

Their ideas of the USA are what they see going on in NY, Chicago, LA and Atlanta. They know very little about our heartland, which is a shame, really. Their BBC stations also paint a rather cynical view of the USA. When talking to them about the happenings around the Midwest they act as if I'm talking about a totally different country. It conflicts with what they see and hear on their tv/radio.

This is and has been my experience with everyone of them for over the past 10 years. So I'm done with this subject. I suppose you have your experiences and I have mine. We're just going to have to agree to disagree here...again.

I'm married to a European (Austrian) so I guess I would know better than any internet friends you have. There are alot of things my wife doesn't like nor understand about America. Insurance is complicated (btw, she (nor anyone she knows) never, ever had to wait for any type of medical care, contrary to the rantings of the anti universal health care crowd), she gets weirded out by all the flag waving, freedom toast loving neo cons, and she doesn't understand why conservatives seem to just hate everyone, even their own nominee for prez. While she'll never become a citizen of this country and would probably prefer to go back to Austria, she holds her hand over her heart during the pledge and our national anthem to show respect. It's too bad that so many Americans can't show respect for Europe and continue to use them as whipping posts.

Anonymous said...

You might want to explain to your wife that it's not the Republicans that are using the hate word. A person rarely turn on tv but what you hear someone, from the Democrat party, saying that they hate Pres. Bush.

As I see it the Republican's don't hate their nominee but are angry and disappointed with him. And if a Democrat nominee voted like a Republican then I'm sure they would be disenchanted with their nominee too.

Hate is a mighty strong word and I don't believe it applies here.

Americans can't show respect for Europe and continue to use them as whipping posts.

And this statement is WAY OVER THE TOP! To be honest, I seriously doubt if American's think much about Europe at all, until someone wants to implement their ideas here in America.

Socialized medicine will not only put millions of people out of work but will jeopardize our health because a great number of people will not want to go into the medical field. Just research a veteran's hospital system - we have!

Anonymous said...

I love that argument Republicans bring on about socialized medicine. It's soooo much better to have 47 million people without health care who do to the ER when they have a cold. Who do you think pays that bill? Taxpayers, either in the form of higher medical costs or through indigent programs that the state provides. Yeah, you guys are right, that's much, much better. Certainly don't want those insurance companies to lose any money for the stockholders...

Hate would be a proper term for those Republicans who seem to dislike anyone who disagrees with them, whether it be on immigration, gay marriage (gay issues in general, for that matter), the war (remember how unpatriotic anyone is who's against the war), guns, etc...

I don't need to explain anything to my wife. She's a well educated woman and can make up her own mind. She reads news here and from Europe, we watch German news every night and we watch American news every night. She's pretty well informed.
