"The art of government is to make two-thirds of a nation pay all it possibly can pay for the benefit of the other third." Voltaire 1694-1778: attributed; Walter Bagehot The English Constitution (1867)
Daniel: I didn't know you could take that particular body function (being screwed) and make it into an "art" form, unless you consider political porn in that mix.
But I fully understand the quote.
And like any decent citizen, I always have the Vaseline handy whenever the goverment says it's for "my own good".
Well, Bob, it looks as though we are going to be grabbing the ole ankles in Floyd County soon. The council is considering the income tax again as a way of raising the "needed revenue" that will be lost due to property tax reform.
Daniel: Just be thankful you never lived in Philly, PA. They have a "city wage tax" that runs about 3X the STATE share of the old paycheck. And there's NO way to get around it. (even though I did on year...as an experiment)
If you LIVE in Philly (and work elsewhere)...you pay. If you WORK in Philly (and live elsewhere)...you pay.
Yet this city is STILL bleeding money like a stuck pig and are up to their eye teeth in debt.
Well, they DO have a huge welfare population and loads of crime to go along with it...wonder if THAT has anything to do with things? Oh, yeah, it SURE does. They call it progress.
And anyone that wants to tell you otherwise, tell them that you know the opposite of PROgress has always been CONgress...lol! (lesser of two evils, eh?)
