Sotomayor says Ethnicity Shapes Her Decisions

President Obama's choice for the Supreme Court, Sonia Sotomayor, has already made some waves despite being introduced only hours ago. Sotomayor is Hispanic and female, a double whammy that Obama is throwing at Republicans and daring them to vote against. Since the story broke this morning, many have been busy looking at her record and her previous words. Among those words are these: "I would hope that a wise Latina woman with the richness of her experiences would more often than not reach a better conclusion than a white male who hasn’t lived that life,”. She has also explained that her ethnicity and gender would make a difference in her judging versus others on the bench. Perhaps the most upsetting to me is her insistence in 2005 that the “court of appeals is where policy is made.”

One would think that policy is made by the legislative branch. Only the most liberal of Obama's final four would think otherwise. The republicans are prepared to dig in their heels on this one.

If you go back into anyone's previous speeches and take parts out of context you will find reasons to be upset.

She has an excellent background and previous judicial experience. And let's not forget that she was appointed as a Federal Judge by none other than George H.W. Bush. A fact that Rush seems to have forgotten.

First, I am no fan of Bush the first. Second, she believes in making policy from the bench. She said it and stands by it. I believe she should be closely vetted and her statements clarified. I never said she shouldn't be approved, but more information is needed. I believe she will pass by more than a party line vote. My worst fear is her stance on the Second Amendment.

While I appreciate her stand WITH lawenforcemnt, ANY "bias" shown by ANY judge is not a good thing...

They should rule by the LAW...not by ANYTHING ELSE.

I believe THAT, only because that's the way the Court was set up by the founding fathers...

I didn't set it up (think Judge Roy Bean)...THEY did.

"I think that the only reason Clarence Thomas is on the Court is because he is black. I don't believe he could have won had he been white. And the reason is, I think it was a cynical ploy by President Bush."

"As a graduate student at Princeton University, Sotomayor wrote a thesis entitled “Deadly Obsession: American Gun Culture.” In the text, Sotomayor makes the argument that the Second Amendment does not actually afford individual citizens the right to bear arms. She believes only the military has this right. According to Sotomayor, it has been illegal for individuals to own firearms since the passing of the Bill of Rights."

Just another issue to be concerned about!
